No Future_

10 Reasons Why It Has Become So Soul-Crushingly Difficult To Find A Job In America Today

Have you been unemployed lately? If so, then you probably know how frustrating it is to try to find a job in the United States today. It now takes the average unemployed worker about 33 weeks to find a job. There are millions of Americans that have not been able to find a full-time job even after searching hard for an entire year. Some areas of the United States have been devastated so badly by the economic downturn that they are starting to resemble war zones. Unless you have been there, it is hard to even try to describe the extreme frustration that one feels when you are unable to pay the mortgage and feed your family. It can be absolutely soul-crushing. But it is not the fault of those who are unemployed. The truth is that our economy is dying and it is not producing nearly enough jobs anymore. Unfortunately, as you will see from the facts listed below, most of the things that are causing our economy to die have no realistic chance of being changed any time soon.

The following are 10 reasons why it has become so insanely difficult to find a job in America today....

#1 There are a lot fewer job openings in the United States today. The number of U.S. job openings declined once again in December. Prior to the most recent economic downturn, there were usually somewhere around 4.5 to 5 million job openings in America. Today there are about 3 million.

#2 There is a lot more competition for the very few job openings that are actually available. According to Gallup, the U.S. unemployment rate has been hovering around 10 percent for over a year. When Gallup includes "underemployed Americans" that have part-time jobs but really want full-time jobs in the numbers, they get a lot worse. Currently, Gallup says that 19.3 percent of the workforce is either unemployed or underemployed.

#3 The U.S. economy is producing an extremely low number of new jobs. The federal government says that only about 36,000 jobs were added in January. Well, an increase of 150,000 jobs per month is necessary just to keep up with population growth. We continue to fall farther and farther behind.

#4 All across the nation, state and local governments are rapidly cutting jobs. Government jobs used to be considered some of the safest jobs available, but today state and local governments all across America are facing horrific budget crunches. In fact, things have gotten so extreme that some cities are cutting their police forces by up to 50 percent.

#5 U.S. businesses are being absolutely crushed by regulations, and yet the government just keeps piling them on. For example, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration is projecting that the food service industry will have to spend an additional 14 million hours every single year just to comply with new federal regulations that mandate that all vending machine operators and chain restaurants must label all products that they sell with a calorie count in a location visible to the consumer. These kinds of ridiculous regulations are chasing U.S. businesses out of the country at a blistering pace.

#6 When you combine all forms of taxation, businesses pay more taxes in the United States than just about anywhere else in the world. Some of the biggest corporations have figured out how to get around this, but many other businesses are being absolutely crushed by this. All of this taxation is also chasing businesses out of the country. Now Barack Obama is at it again. Hehas just proposed an increase in unemployment taxes. This is going to make it even less likely that businesses will want to hire more employees.

#7 Advances in technology mean that less workers are needed today. A robot can do the labor that a hundred workers used to perform. A computer can do the work that a thousand people used to perform. Our society now needs less manual labor than it used to, and that is not going to change. In fact, our society is only going to become more computerized and more automated. That means that the ultra-wealthy do not need as many of us to work for them.

#8 Nations such as China are taking jobs away from us. Tens of thousands of factories and millions of jobs are moving to China. There is a reason why Barack Obama mentioned China four times during his State of the Union address. China now even makes more beer than the United States does. China has been very shrewd. They have invited international corporations to come over and take advantage of their vast population by paying them slave labor wages. The U.S. middle class is being shredded by this. Why should companies pay U.S. workers 10 or 20 times more than they could pay a Chinese worker?

#9 Every single year, the U.S. buys hundreds of billions of dollars more stuff from the rest of the world than they buy from us. This is called a trade deficit, and it is killing the U.S. economy. The hundreds of billions of dollars going to the rest of the world could be going to U.S. businesses, and in turn U.S. businesses would need more workers. But instead of fixing our trade balance problem, our politicians continue to insist that "globalism" is going to be really, really "good" for us.

#10 Every single year the U.S. federal government spends hundreds of billions of dollars just on interest on the national debt. This is money that we don't get any economic benefit from. If we were not in so much debt, the U.S. government would be able to spend that money on goods and services inside the United States and that would support a lot more jobs. This is just one of the ways that our horrific national debt is a tremendous drag on our economy.

Empire of Debt: How Debt is Choking the Productivity Out of the Economy

Guest Post: The Great Global Debt Prison

The Great Global Debt Prison

By Giordano Bruno

Neithercorp Press – 2/4/2011

Tense and terrible times inevitably summon an odd coupling of two very different and difficult human conditions; honesty, and brutality. Certain painful truths are revealed, and often, a palpable fury erupts. Being that times today are particularly tense, and on the verge of being spectacularly terrible, perhaps we should embrace both conditions in a constructive manner, and become brutally honest with ourselves. This begins by admitting to that which most ails us. It begins by admitting how far we have fallen…

Our economy, our culture, our entire world, is built upon debt. No one ever asked us if that’s how we wanted it, it is simply how the system was designed when we came into it. Many of us have lived our entire lives under the assumption that debt is a necessary function of daily commerce and a valuable driver of successful society. Most households in America operate at a steep loss, trapped in constantly building cycles of liability and interest. There are even widely held schools of economic thought that are centered completely on the production and utilization of nothing but debt. Only recently have many people begun to ask themselves what the tangible benefits are (if any) in being dependent on debt based finance.

After careful examination, it becomes evident that debt does not fuel economy, it suffocates it. It does not nurture growth, it stunts and poisons it. Extreme debt is not a fundamental organ in a body of commerce; it is an aberration, a spreading cancer which disrupts the circulation of healthy trade. Debt is, in large part, unnecessary.

Of course, debt can be very useful if you are the controller or determining overseer of a system, especially if you wish to centralize and maintain power over that system. The tactical wielding of debt has been used by elites for centuries as a means to imprison the masses, or to create an atmosphere of endless dependency. Let’s take a look at what debt really is, and how it is being used against the average American today…

OMG WTF, I have no Future

For nations living the good life, the party's over, IMF says

For nations living the good life, the party's over, IMF says

Washington Post Staff Writer
Saturday, April 24, 2010

In the lingo of the International Monetary Fund, the future of the world hinges on "rebalancing and consolidation," antiseptic words that would not seem to raise a fuss.

THIS STORY

Who doesn't want more balance in their life?

But the translation is a bit ruder, something on the order of: "Suck it up. The party's over."

To keep the global economy on track, people in the United States and the rest of the developed world need to work longer before retiring, pay higher taxes and expect less from government. And the cheap imports lining the shelves of mega-chains such as Wal-Mart and Target? They need to be more expensive.

That's the practical meaning of a series of policy papers and statements issued in recent days by IMF officials, who have a long history of stabilizing economies and solving global financial problems, as they plot a course to keep the world economy growing and reduce the risk of another "great recession."

Jobless claims rise by largest amount in 3 months

WASHINGTON – The number of people filing new claims forunemployment benefits unexpectedly rose last week by the largest amount in three months. The surge is evidence of how volatile the job market remains, even as the economy grows.

Applications for unemployment benefits rose to 471,000 last week, up by 25,000 from the previous week, the Labor Department said Thursday. It was the first increase in five weeks and the biggest jump since a gain of 40,000 in February.

By MARTIN CRUTSINGER, AP Economics Writer 5 mins ago

The total was the highest since new claims reached 480,000 on April 10. It also pushed the average for the last four weeks to 453,500.

"Although no one expects this volatile series to go in one direction every single week, this is clearly a disappointment," said Jennifer Lee, senior economist at BMO Capital Markets.

Stocks slid as investors' already bleak view of the world economy worsened with another drop in the euro and the disappointing U.S. employment news. The Dow Jones industrial average fell more than 250 points in early afternoon trading.

In a separate report, a private research group said its index of leading economic indicators dipped slightly in April. It was the first decline in more than a year. Six of the 10 components on the Conference Board's index deteriorated. Among them: U.S. residents filed fewer applications to build homes; vendors were slower in delivering supplies to companies; the unemployed filed more claims for jobless aid; and consumers' confidence dropped.

Is Ron Paul the only politician making sense>?

US wants “obedient servants of the state” – Ron Paul

Published 14 January, 2010, 11:21

Edited 18 January, 2010, 18:56

“The greatest threat to a government is people who think for themselves,” believes US Congressman Ron Paul.

Paul said the billions of dollars spent by the American government on intelligence could not prevent the recent terror attempt in US skies.“If you condition people to everyday, all day, depend on the government to do their thinking for them – they will become more obedient.”

“I think the responsibility has fallen on the $75 billion bureaucracy that has 16 agencies that cannot co-ordinate their work,” he said. “Airlines should be responsible for who gets on their planes,” he added.

According to the congressman, all the efforts of the US government to introduce new technical systems for airport passenger control, such as body scanners, are “just to make us obedient servants of the state, to teach us that they are in charge of us and to tell us what to do, that we are robots and are supposed to obey them.”

“It’s not that individuals are perfect, it’s just that governments are always imperfect, they always make mistakes and when they do – they are very painful and they hurt each and every one of us.”

Paul said that America has made an amazing shift away from traditional values while even former communist regimes are moving in the direction of a free market.

“[The economy] should be micromanaged by the people, by the consumer. In the free market the consumer is king,” Paul said. “But in the US, as in most countries in the world today, it is being micromanaged by the central government and central banks.”

Speaking about the earthquake in Haiti, Paul said, “just handing out money to Haiti is not going to solve their problems.”

According to the outspoken politician, the best thing the US could do for Haiti in the long term would be to introduce the country to sound economic policies so that they would not suffer from poverty.

Commenting on the situation in Yemen, Paul said that the US is“looking for another war” and that it is a “disastrous continuation of the foreign policy of George Bush.”

Last Thursday, the Commodity Futures Trading Commission held hearings on the possible imposition of commodity futures and options trading limits in the precious metals markets. Each of the five commissioners plus two CFTC staff members made presentations. In addition, 14 outside parties accepted invitations to make presentations.

This hearing came about in part because of long-term complaints from organizations such as the Gold Anti-Trust Action Committee and individual analysts such as Ted Butler, Reg Howe, James Turk, Frank Veneroso and Adrian Douglas that the gold and silver commodity markets have been subject to blatant extensive price suppression manipulation by the U.S. government and its trading partners.

New! Whistleblower Exposes
JP Morgan's
Silver
Manipulation Scheme...And
The Same
Exact Thing
Happens
In
The Gold
Markets
Too

Yesterday, during CFTC position limit hearings for gold and silver futures contracts, GATA Chairman Bill Murphy read a letter from London metals trader Andrew Maguire regarding how JP Morgan metal traders "bragged" about making money in the silver futures markets by manipulating them. Zero Hedge has already posted the full transcript of Mr. Maguire's correspondence, so to avoid redundancy, I will not replicate that correspondence here. More than two years ago, in October, 2008 I sent CFTC Commissioner Bart Chilton very compelling circumstantial evidence that massive manipulation was occuring in gold futures markets based upon my understanding of how massive shorts were initiated in the gold futures markets and bids sometimes pulled, creating a collapse in momentum, at precise times in the NY markets, to create waterfall declines in the gold futures market. Below is the correspondence I had with Mr. Chilton more than two years ago and my original blog post in its original format that I posted on the Underground Investor on October 16, 2008:

Cocky & Arrogant Traders Allegedly Brag That They Manipulate The Market

The New York Post reports that a trader who recently accused JPMorgan of attempting to manipulate the gold and silver markets, had his car rammed in London last weekend. The police used helicopters to catch the fleeing driver, who absconded on foot.

Andrew Maguire is a metal trader at the London Bullion Market Association. He and his wife were hospitalised following the accident, as a car came out of a side street and smashed into their vehicle. They have made a full recovery.

In a series of astonishing e-mails, Maguire previously set out his concerns to the US Commodity Futures Trading Commission's Enforcement Division about how JPMorgan was allegedly manipulating the markets using positions it inherited from Bear Stearns 2 years ago. But the CFTC has allegedly done nothing with the information.

CFTC whistleblower injured in London hit-and-run

Section:

6:39p ET Saturday, March 27, 2010

Dear Friend of GATA and Gold:

London metals trader Andrew Maguire, who warned an investigator for the U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission in advance about a gold and silver market manipulation to be undertaken by traders for JPMorgan Chase in February and whose whistleblowing was publicized by GATA at Thursday's CFTC hearing on metals futures trading was injured along with his wife the next day when their car was struck by a hit-and-run driver in the London area.

According to GATA's contact with Maguire, board member Adrian Douglas, Maguire and his wife were admitted to a hospital overnight and released today and are expected to recover fully.

Maguire told Douglas by telephone today that his car was struck by a car careening out of a side road. When a pedestrian who witnessed the crash tried to block the other driver's escape, the other driver accelerated at the pedestrian, causing him to jump out of the way to avoid being hit. The other driver's car then struck two other cars in escaping. But the other driver was caught by police after a chase in which police helicopters were summoned.

We'll convey more information about the incident as it becomes available.

CHRIS POWELL, Secretary/Treasurer
Gold Anti-Trust Action Committee Inc.
