County seizing cars to collect back taxes
ISLE OF WIGHT — Keep an eye on your wheels if you owe back taxes in Isle of Wight County.
The county, in an effort to collect more than $1.2 million owed in delinquent personal property taxes from 2003 to 2008, has contracted with a collection company that has the authority to seize and impound the vehicles of taxpayers with back bills totaling more than $500, said Treasurer Judith Wells.
Since mid-February, employees of the Suffolk-based Virginia Auction, Collection & Recovery Co. have been patrolling parking lots, neighborhood streets and county highways looking for — and frequently, finding — vehicles registered to the 5,000 delinquent taxpayers whose names were turned over by the Treasurer's Office, said company owner Roy Black.
